The total population of people living in extreme poverty is made up by Sub-Saharan African and South Asians, they also make up more than 91% of the world’s population living in extreme poverty. It is especially important to track these numbers as they can also provide insight into health and financial inclusion.
It is generally agreed that a person with the purchasing power of less than $1.90 USD is considered to be living in extreme poverty. While there has been steady decline in the population of the world living in extreme poverty, it is estimated that there are 746 million people living in extreme poverty.
Two of the top five aid receiving Countries also account for more than 12% of the World’s highest share of people living in poverty & extreme poverty. These Countries have seen improvement in Education, Health, Clean Water and Infrastructure, but, much more remains to be done to ensure they are on the path to sustainable development.
Imagine a world where 3% of total aid going these two Countries is repurposed for developing technology ecosystems, encouraging Women & Girls in S.T.E.M, and fostering innovation. Not only would we have reduced poverty & extreme poverty, this may as well birth the next disruptive technology !
